'In aid of a cause' and more

Metro Plus Bangalore carried an interview yesterday with someone I know and happen to be related to. It is nice to see his tough work on AIDS/HIV prevention being showcased.

Kottke revisited the Nike personalized "sweatshop" shoes email that caused a furore some years ago.

Among the totally limited food reading that I do, this is one site that I visit often. And it is not just because I simply love pasta.

I read through the Chennai restaurant list that I posted earlier and found out that many of my favourite places were missing. So I am thinking of writing a "hundred different restaurants in Chennai" list. If you live/love Chennai and its restaurants, please do drop me a line about your favourite restaurants in this city, I'll really appreciate the help. Thanks.

Echo , I visited the Pelita Nasi Kandar, Malaysian cuisine near Pondy Bazzar two weeks back. The Parathas in this restaurant were really good and heard from one of my friends that the origin of Parathas is Malaysia.

One of my favorite’s is the, ‘The Right Place, Residency’ at GNT Chetty Road. My mouth is watering when I think of the Kathirika Kara Kozhumbu and Kal Dosai that I have regularly at this place.

The buffet at GRT Radisson and Chola Sheraton are quite good.

Vasantha Bhavan Tambaram and Apporva Sangetha’s at different places in Chennai
are really good for a quick meal.

Tapas Bar and Tinto at Residency are excellent Bars with good ambience. Tapas Bar is famous for a Spanish guy preparing mock tails. The Tinto at Residency has a huge movie screen.

Reading about the food joints and the food makes me yearn for quality S. Indian food! Its been a while since I visited the restaurants in Chennai and will be inappropriate for me to suggest any restaurants. However...

I used to enjoy eating at Ponnusamy. Does this place qualify in this list? It had got some mouth watering tasty dishes. Heard Karaikudi restaurant was great too. Saravana Bhavan is always there!

How is Copper Chimney? I thought that was a decent place as well.

Echo, some of my favourite restaurants I could think of is Revolving restaurant( near Kilpauk). The food is very spicy there, but if we drop
at night then we can enjoy the
aerial view of that road with the
central rotator slowly rotating
in stepped manner..
Malgudi restaurant - savera is good, the buffay at residency towers, residency , dakshin ( park
sheraton),GRT's copper point are all equally good.
For Non Vegetarian items, the
"Anjappar" and "Ponnuswamy" are
There is only one hotel
( could not remember the name)
which is famous only for
different kind of rotis., etc The taste is awesome.. These restaurants , I could think as of now and if i churn little I could get more.

Thanks Ravages for the great list.

I was delighted to see Mathura, Karpagam Mess (yumm thengai poli!), Palimar, Dhabba Express, Amaravathy, Maris - places that I love to frequent.

Is Udipi Welcome in Purasawalkam, the old Silver Star? I hope so. Once upon a time, my family used to go there every week for the hot idlis and the tasty coconut chutney that used to be placed in big containers on every table.

You're welcome. I am not sure what Udupi Welcome was called earlier (as far as I know, it was always welcome) and they serve the best Idly's in town. breakfast at udupi is something I will give my soul to. The way they serve the steaming hot idly and then submerge it in Sambar with a small "kinnam" of Chutney.

Echo/Lavanya said...

The kinnam of chutney sounds remarkably like Silver Star. I have not been to that area in a long time and I suppose I need to check out Udipi Welcome ASAP :)

On the idli & dosa subject, it might be interesting to see which are the most popular haunts in town for these items. I like the Murugan Idli shop for the nice puli chutney they serve. The idlis are good too. And the ghee dosa..ummmmm

Ravages said...

somehow, I don't like Murugan Idly's idly. The idlys are a little hard, and fat - if you know what I mean. But their Ghee dosa and pongal is just great news

Echo/Lavanya said...

Oh well - the Murugan idli is not exactly 'malligai poo' idli. I agree with that. Somehow I am partial to those chutneys :)

And all this talk about idlis is inspiring me to google it and see what I get.

Dhabba Express is my favorite Indian place in the city. Good cultural atmosphere and great food!

Sparky´s Diner is a very good place for American food and good American cultural ambiance.
